    Silver Lining - Amarra / Lochannar / Ellery Boatyb10

Amarra stood at the starboard railing, staring into the waves. She hadn't heard anything back from anyone in some time, from either Evandra or Nilo. She didn't expect Lin to write, but it hardly hurt her feelings. She took a breath. No, her daughter wouldn't write to her, but after everything that had happened... The ship rocked and her hands flew to the railing to steady herself. Another breath steadied both her feet and her mind. It was surprisingly pleasant; a cool breeze ran over the ship, but the warmth of the sun kept the chill away.

They had already travelled so far, and now there was more journey before she could rest easily. The rocking of the ship wasn't such a foreign feeling now; She had travelled to Lasmira to find Liniel, fled to Ledra - And now I'm going to the Red Dutchy. She sighed heavily. She had heard so much rumour about the place, even as a younger woman, and to go there was a bit unsettling.

But it was for Eva and Nilo, and she would do anything for them. A smile returned to her, after so long. She had spent any time in her cabin sketching, and quite a bit of time chatting with Ellery. Weddings always filled her with giddiness; the music, the dancing, the smiles, and of course the dress. Her chin lifted a bit, allowing her to look at the whisps of clouds in the sky.

    Where was that cat?

Ellery pursed her lips and counted again. Five. Three kittens bounced too and fro in her small cabin, chasing their father and pouncing on their mother. But where, oh where, was Thinda? She ran her fingers through her tangled mop, and mused aloud. "Well, she can't have gone far, now could she? But oh bother! The ship is small in comparison to the world but oh so large to a kitten."

Canya pounced on her foot, but with a gentle nudge, Ellery sent the playful cat back into the fray and slipped out the door. With a small twirl she made sure the hall was devoid of kitties. "Good, all clear."

With that, she continued on her way. The first few days on board the ship weren't very pleasant, but after she'd accustomed to the constant rocking to and fro, she found the whole endeavor rather enjoyable. She smiled and continued her search.

After she called softly for Thinda and traipsed along the area near her cabin, she headed up to the deck. The fresh sea air hit her as she came outside, and she drew a deep breath of pleasure. Scanning the area, her eyes landed not on her quarry, but on a tall, grim figure.

Lochannar leaned over the rail, and remained motionless. And considering his previous attempts to disguise his seasickness, Ellery decided that now was probably not the best time to disturb him. He was probably in an even more contrary mood; if such a thing were possible. Although, he had been more even tempered as of late.

And--tada!-- there she was. A fluffy little grey figure sat near Lochnnar's feet, and pawed at his boots. For some odd reason, the little cat had taken quite a liking to the sulky man-- but who was Ellery to judge. Presuming that Thinda was well accounted for, she turned her attention elsewhere.

Amarra stood at the other side of the ship, looking rather pensive. Really, Ellery thought she had been given rather dreary travelling companions at times; but then again, Amarra could be quite fun and conversational.

A few steps and she was at Amarra's side. She breathed deeply. "A beautiful day, isn't it? I find the sea rather lovely." She cast a glance over her shoulder; a bit pointedly at their water-hating escort.

"But we shouldn't be too much longer at sea, hm? I'm dreadfully eager to arrive at the Red Dutchy. I hope Nilo has been keeping an eye on them." Ellery pursed her lips. Nilo was, to her, the only responsible member of their company. Well, sometimes. Perhaps Zinnian was keeping them in line.

"I'm sure they're all fine." She spoke softly, her words nearly disappearing into the waves. She enjoyed the time she spent with Ellery; she was sweet and could cook when the older woman had burnt whatever she tried. She gave a quiet laugh. "However, I have a feeling Eva isn't going to be too happy when we try to put her in fabric." The wind whipped and rocked the boat, and Amarra's hand clung to the railing. Maybe it was still a bit strange sailing.

Ellery leaned her elbows against the railing and sighed. "Fine? Yeah, probably. I think." She frowned. "At least they're probably not caked in salty sea smell and in desperate need for a bath." Her nose wrinkled, and she brushed her fingers through her unruly curls.

"Hah! She can try to resist." Ellery cracked her knuckles, the corner of her mouth tugging up in a sly expression. "It'll be a piece of cake!"

Oh great, now she wanted some cake. Food on board a ship was NOT that great. She rubbed her stomach. Hopefully the Red Dutchy had great food. If not, she would find her way to a kitchen. Somehow.

Ellery grinned up to Amarra. "I'll hold her, you tie her down, yes?~"

Amarra laughed a little harder, "Deal, though I only have a measuring tape with me. I don't know if it would hold her." She looked back out to the waves, seeing the tiniest bit of land; The Red Duchy island of Eiluxis. They were almost there. "I think it's time for us to ready ourselves. It shouldn't be but a few hours." The turned away, and her eyes fell on poor Lochannar.

She stepped up next to him. "Are you feeling any better Lochannar?" She didn't dare touch him, just out of courtesy. "We're almost there, if it helps."

"If doubtful, I could always sit on her." Ellery grinned and bounced on her heels. Her gaze followed Amarra's, and she gasped. "Is that land?" She paused, as she nearly polwed Amarra down with her words.

"A few hours? All right, I need to confiscate the last kitten then..." She turned to Lochannar, and her jaw dropped.

Oddly enough, Thinda was perched happily on his shoulder, batting her paws at a stray piece of his hair. Lochannar, however, seemed not to  notice. So, as inconspicuously as possibly, Ellery snatched the furry critter from his shoulder. "There you are, you rotten little kitty..." she scolded as she tromped off to their cabin.

He heaved a deep sigh when Amarra approached him. "I..." he paused for a moment, "am going to be just fine, as soon as we get off this piece of driftwood." He gripped the rail, his knuckles white. "You said a few hours?" His face, though sunburned, looked pasty and a little green. "Well, at least she took that blasted kitten away."

She patted one of his hands lightly, "Don't worry, the estimate is worst case scenario. At most a few hours. If we're lucky, maybe a little under one hour. We still must physically sail." She sighed in sympathy for the werecat. Her hand went to her bag, and she pulled out and tore off a piece of aloe. "Here. It may not ease your stomach, but you're starting to burn, dear."

She looked back to Ellery, who departed from them, and swallowed. She lowered her voice as she spoke once more. "Lochannar... I have something to ask you before we reach the shore." It had been on her mind for days, but now that she had mentioned it she couldn't back out. "Please, watch the girls. Especially Liniel and Evandra." there was something sad in her eyes, but it was hard to tell with the sun glaring like it was. "I've heard things about this place, and I don't fully trust it."

His fingers twitched when Amarra touched him. "I don't put much stock in best case scenarios, Amarra." He wobbled a little. "But for once, I'm hoping for one." Sea voyages were the worst. He'd rather live underground for a year. No, a decade. Anything but the constant rocking two and fro...

Gingerly accepting the aloe, he sighed. He could almost hear Ellery berating him for not thanking her,
but, perhaps just out of spite, he merely gave Amarra a curt not. He cautiously began to smear some on his face. Between the sunburn, the grimace, and the scar, Lochannar was quite the sight.

"Don't worry." He scoffed. "I probably have more misgivings about this than anyone else. I don't trust this place. I don't trust those people. I don't even trust Lin or Eva." He laughed without mirth, wiping the last of the aloe onto the sunburn. "I'll be on my guard, you have my word."

"But just..." he hesitated. An image of Miluineth flashed before his eyes. "Just know that I can't always protect people..."

She saw that pain, and she knew it well. "No one can." She mumbled. Guilt rung out in sympathy, echoing deep in her chest. "No one can protect everyone all the time. Not even the greatest warriors can save everyone." One could only hope that her words would get through to him. Her thoughts wandered back to when she argued with him and then hugged him back in the forests they hid in, and hoped.

Sometimes if she looked quick... She could see her brother in his face. "Lochannar." She spoke his name to ground herself. "I trust you. I believe in you." Maybe what she said was cheesy, but sometimes... "It won't be too long. I hope you feel better soon." She patted his hand again and went to gather her things.
