- Music / Backwards Lin's Theme:
Liniel peeked around the corner. Her eyes darted around, looking for any signs of trouble. It seemed all clear.... She snuck out, staying close to one side of the street, books in hand. Her head stayed mostly down. Could she get back to her home in one piece? Well, that was a bit of an exaggeration; of course she would. It felt like a horrible, dangerous adventure every time she left the house.
'Please don't see me. Please don't notice me.' She hoped that she could go just one trip without being stopped. People terrified her. Just the thought of trying to talk to anyone started to shorten her breaths. Anxiety shut her eyes as it crept up her spine. 'No, No, No. Just stay calm. You'll be okay.' She took a breath and held it, pushing her head up an inch or two higher.
"Oh, look guys! If it isn't Little Lin." Her eyes snapped open and her heart sunk in dread. She stopped dead in her tracks, right in front of a group of boys. "Hey, Lin." One smiled. "How's it going?" The phrase was hissed out, malice lining the words of the young man.
Suddenly, the books flew out of her hands when a boy came to her side, knocking them into the damp street. He laughed at the fear in her eyes. "P-please, just leave me alone." Her shoulders slumped and her head dipped as she huddled. She hoped they wouldn't try to get violent this time...
"What? All we ever want to do is be your friends, Lin. What's the problem?" She jerked to the side, barely feeling hands push her, and she thudded onto the stone street. Blood seeped into her dress sleeve.
She pushed herself up to sit, not daring to look up at the boys. 'Don't fight them, they'll only hit you harder if you do...' Their laughs echoed, and she looked up to find them walking away. Laughing at her.
Sniffing, she realized she was crying. Again. Her eyes slid over to where her books lay; in a puddle. 'Oh no...' Soaked pages dripped as she scrambled to get them out of the water. "No, Now I have to pay for them...!" She whispered. She didn't have the money.... Now the tears were obvious as she sat on the side of the road, crying.
