    Darkness Falls - Pirates

    Darkness Falls

The mists of Genaes shrouded the piercing rocks, both protecting and trapping the people of Davenport. It was so treacherous, and the port was damaged and being repaired, and Katrina and Quincy were forced to take a rowboat to the docks. Genaes, once a part of Zikrus, had recently founded its independence, but not without cost. Davenport itself was a highly sought after staple in trade routes, being closer than any city to Cronane.

As valuable as it was, the new island country was hardly inviting. Built in old world architecture and stone, the atmosphere was cold and haunting. The soldiers wore helms with fangs and dressed in dark shades, the residences never stayed long in the streets of their city, and even the lights lining the cobblestone roads couldn't cut through the ever-present fog. Flags were tattered on high stone walls, but they all bore the crest of the new ruing Lord. The city would have seemed abandoned, had it not been for the merchants and soldiers forced to stay outside.

Katrina had already exhausted all of her intel, though she wouldn't tell Quincy what exactly she was looking for. They were the only ones who roamed the streets, but eventually, she gave up and they headed towards a pup, vocalizing her hopes that maybe they would hear something useful there.

"Ah, a delightful place for a vacation, don'tcha think, Capn?" Quincy quipped and tugged her hood in place, hardly hiding her smirk. Dark, stony cities with guards dressed like the living dead and a chill that would send half of the Innis-Warriors quaking in their kilts were just the places she loved to haunt.

But that didn't keep her from unsettled nerves. She cast a sideways glance at Katrina. She was rather null on the 'whys' of coming here, and bringing only her 'trusty' new recruit was a brilliant way of saying she needed some live bait in case the going got rough.

She adjusted her bow and smirked. Not that she'd be easy bait.

"Ah, eavesdropping in the local pub?" She twirled a braid around her fingers and let it drop. "My specialty." She hummed a few notes, then cocked an eyebrow. "An what do you deem useful?"

As the two entered the pub among the small chatter a man sat in a stool near the corner, singing. The voice was soft and smooth and seemed to dance across the medley, in front of him sat a small hat which seemed to be there for donations due to the small amount of coin inside of it.

The man stood around 5'11" to 6'0 tall and bore short and messy blonde hair and bright blue eyes, also adorning a short beard. He was thin and wore clothes of a commoner, though he gave off a bit of a preppy aura. Next to him sat a large staff that could be used for a walking stick or perhaps something else. The man smiled as he made his way through the song, seeming to enjoy every moment of what he was doing even though most of the patrons did not pay much attention to him.

Zavie was a performer in Davenport, the young boy's exotic dances and strange clothing caught the attention of the locals and while some shunned him, others were drawn to him. He paid them very little mind though, eyes looking for someone who clearly had a penny to spare. He needed the money to live, and performing and thieving were the only things he was really good at.

He'd eye the two women who entered, noting he hadn't seem them here before. That didn't raise suspicion, no, it raised interest. Those who traveled here always wanted something and something generally meant money. Well, with a hint of a smile, he'd spin on the table and begin a new dance trying his best to catch as much attention as he could. Time to try and gain money or information of his own...

The Bartender smiled at them. "Welcome in, Ladies! Have a seat anywhere you'd like." Katrina nodded to him, and He'd give her a slight nod back. A friend perhaps, or maybe just someone she frequented. She lead Quincy towards the middle of the room - Indeed, noticing the boy, but seeming more sad than entertained by his presence. She sat and mumbled to Quincy, just barely over the singing and chatter. "I thought eavesdropping was your specialty, dear Quincy. I have faith that you can tell the difference in what's useful or not."

A group of three guards entered and spoke with the Bartender a moment before heading towards Zavie. The lead, adorned with a blood red cape instead of a black one and his visor up, seemingly to make room for his robust nose, walked up to the boy. His mustache was awkwardly long and strangely kept, and he spoke with an odd accent. "Ahk'scooz me child', vood yeu leik tu e'splain tu me whah yeu are on d'table? Hm?" He crosses his arms and juts his head forward accusingly.

"Mercy, is that blessed to the ears." Her eyes sought the singer, though she halted her step. They didn't have time for dawdling or flirting with handsome bards. She sighed; it was a true pity.

So she merely flashed him a dashing smile, flicked a coin into the hat, and continued onward, keeping in track with Katrina.

"Useful can be a bit subjective, but I appreciate your trust," she slid into her chair, leaned back, and idly watched the guards approach the boy. She tuned her ears into the surrounding conversations, listening for 'interesting' tidbits.

Gabriel nodded in thanks to Quincy as she flicked the coin into his hat, as he wrapped up he reached down and picked up the hat, pocketing the change and placing it back gently on his head. He grabbed his staff and looked around scanning the bar, his eyes locked onto the girl who had tipped him so he walked over to her in hopes of starting a conversation "Good day miss, I appreciate the tip you gave me back there. It was most kind of you." he said in a proper tone with a wide smile. " 'Tis not often the patrons of this bar even spare me a passing glance".

Of course knights would come... With a silent sigh, and an unhappy word or two kept hidden tightly in his mind, he'd stop his dancing to look at the night. He was close to eye level with him thanks to the table. It was, quite honestly, irritating the pub owner didn't cone heckle him instead. No, he just had to ignore his duties and let a child be taken care of by the authorities. What great compassion these people had...

"I, uh... I'm sorry... No one has told me that I couldn't dance here, I'll um... I'll go..." he'd say quietly, gently stepping onto a chair before stepping onto the floor. He'd bow gently, the ribbons attached to his armlet swaying gently at the movement. He'd wait for a second to see if that action was satisfactory enough or not, if it was he'd make his way to a corner of the tavern, pressing himself to the wall. How was he going to make money for the night...? Wretched fools...

Katrina watched the guards and the boy, barely noticing the 'bard' approach. Once he opened his mouth she slowly turned to him "That's because you're a bard, boy, so why don't you get back to what you know and sing. We've business to attend to."

Katrina scowled at the guard captain as he tossed a musty, heavy woolen blanket over the boy's head. "Ehnd cov'er yeurself ahp, lest yeu be sharged wif pooblic en'decency!" With a nose upturned, he and his fellow guards made way for the exit, "Ehnd don't leht me cash yeu ehgehn!"

Once they were gone, Katrina stood and walked over to Zavie. "Dear," She said softly, kneeling next to him to look him in the eye, "May I ask where you're from? Why are you all by yourself...?"

Idle chatter. Quincy pursed her lips, and was so in tuned to distant conversations, that she almost didn't catch the fellow's approach. Her pleasant response died in her lips with Katrina's harsh retort.

Why, that was almost personally offensive. She raised an eyebrow at Katrina and tapped the table with a coin. She rolled it in her fingers, then, as Katrina's attention was diverted by the situation with the guard, she slid it toward Gabriel.

"Take it, handsome. You've a lovely voice."

She watched Katrina head over to the lad, then twisted in her chair and diverted her attention to Gabriel. "You a local here? "

Gabriel just smiled at Katrina and gave her no more attention. He blushed at Quinn's comment "Well...uh..thanks..haha, that is very kind of you to say miss." he said shyly before taking the coin and putting it in his pocket with the rest. Gabe turned his head to look at where Katrina had gone, he frowned at the sight of the boy, feeling bad for him. "I'll be back, give me just a small moment lass." he turned and jogged over to the corner zavie was in and took the 5 or 6 coins in his pocket out, laying them down in front of him. "Here you go lad, I hope it can be put to good use." he offered a kind smile and then jogged back over to Quincy. "No..Im not local, Im searching for my sister."

A blanket? People in these lands were weird. With that logic, he might strip here and there and just keep the blanket over himself. Is that decent enough? Really, where he was from wearing more than this would lead to death by the heat. Naked? Public indecency? Men could walk around without shirts all the time yet he wearing the only decent clothes he had was indecent? It was complete blasphemy in his eyes, a contradiction he despised.

"I'm not alone. My mom... Um... She's a few streets over doing her 'business'... I make my own gold, but I can't do that when people call me a stripper." he'd say with an edge of spite in his voice. He hated these stuck up snobs who looked at him with sad eyes. He was a dancer, a performer, he was trained by his Mistress to please people with his movements. They acted like h was a seller of his body... It sickened him...

"I don't need your pity, bard." He'd spat at the man, dropping the coins to the ground and stomping on them. He despised sad eyes... He'd rather kill than let people pity him. He was a proud servant... Or was... He... The defiant look in his eyes would soon soften and he'd turn his head away from Kat. She was too nice... People like that were always people that wished to throw him into some home... Or back into the trade... He'd never belong to anyone else he was hers...

She took a breath. She knew he wasn't from there. She had seen Xynnar clothes, she knew what the slaves looked like. "Now, this boy is just trying to help you. You want to earn gold, yes? He liked your dancing, that's why he's giving you the money." Maybe she could get him to take the gold, if only for him to buy some food.

She hummed. "Perhaps you can help me. I'll pay you if you tell me a little bit about yourself. How does that sound?" She sat on the floor, "I'm trying to keep horrible people from doing very bad things to innocent people, but I need to find out how they're doing it."

Quincy harrumphed quietly when Gabriel bounded over to the lad. Funny how the kind hearts of the world picked the ungrateful brats to pour out their compassion upon. It happened again and again, yet still the poor souls still stepped out to help - and got rejected. Pitiful.

No matter. She hopped up and slipped up to the counter, ordering herself a drink. As she turned back to her table, Gabriel had returned. "Ah, almost didn' expect you to come back!" She thunked her tankard to the table and plopped down.

"A sister, you say?" She gestured around the room. "In this musty old place? I don't think anyone would want to find a missin' sister here." She formed her words tightly, but to Gabriel, the hints of her Innis accent would be noticeable.
